Important Message From the Huffman Neighborhood Watch

Do you text?

If you enjoy getting and sharing jokes and funny pictures on your cell phone, the Huffman Neighborhood Watch needs your help!

Please consider adding your text number to our Community Alert list. It’s a free service, provided by volunteers from the Huffman Neighborhood Watch. (Standard charges may apply, so check with your service provider.)

Subscribers will receive a daily text update detailing all criminal activity in which the Houston Police Department filled out UCR Reports in the Huffman area. Check out the examples below. (Please note, HPD does not include county-controlled areas as part of it’s jurisdiction.)

Participating in the Community Alert System is a simple yet effective way to keep informed when a theft, burglary, assault, narcotics arrest… or worse… happens close to your home. It will also give you the ability to “sound the alarm” when crime happens near friends and family, by simply forwarding the message.

To sign up, text the word “ADD” to (832) 316-1847.

As you are well aware, there’s been a lot of buzz lately about an “increase in crime” in Huffman recently.  Council Member Sullivan discussed these concerns with Captain Bennett (the substation Captain that came out to your meeting a few months ago); Captain Bennett assured us that crime has been steadily trending downward since the first of the year in 24C40’s beat, and that Part 1 crimes are actually down 40% compared to the same time frame last year.  He has also tried to increase police presence in your area, while ensuring that the officers maintain high levels of visibility.

Although the numbers show that reported crime in Huffman has decreased, Council Member Sullivan understands the concerns from residents in Huffman.  He would like to bring the Huffman community together for an open discussion with HPD leadership including Chief of Police, Chief McClelland, and Captain Bennett.  By doing this, it is his hope that residents can express their concerns and discuss ideas with HPD on how to reduce crime even further.

I remember that the Lakewood Heights Neighborhood Watch group really appreciated the honest and open discussion with Captain Bennett, and Council Member Sullivan would like all Huffman residents to have the same opportunity for the future discussion with HPD leadership.  Since your group has regularly scheduled meetings on crime that are well organized and gather a large attendance, Council Member Sullivan wanted to ask if you or the group would be opposed to opening one of your monthly meetings to the entire community for this proposed meeting.  If you’re not opposed, can you please send some dates of future meetings so that we can find the one that works best for everyone?

Thank you in advance, we really appreciate it!
